Detached Passivhaus, Bath

This 4-bedroom family home, located on the south facing slopes of Bathwick Hill, has been designed to respond to its surrounding context through a spatial division of the ground floor and first floor elements. The ground floor will be stepped back into the hillside to maximise the garden space, while the first floor will be stepped forward to maintain a stand-off to the property behind. The resulting cantilever provides solar shading for the south west facing patio doors serving the open plan living, dining and kitchen space on GF. The external materials used will reinforce this visual separation. The ground floor will be enclosed within thick natural random rubble stone walls, which grow organically out of the hill, reflecting the existing retaining wall of the property behind. The first floor, clad in timber, has been designed to appear lightweight and to blend into the background of the surrounding wooded backdrop. This will help to soften the appearance of the building within its context. Construction is under way and is expected to be completed early 2017.
